Louise Kikuchi

Louise Kikuchi’s series, Points of Reference, is inspired by three cities where she has resided: Paris, Tokyo and Seattle.  Born in Hawaii, she studied at the Sorbonne in Paris before receiving her BA with high honors from the University of Hawaii in 1967.  Kikuchi went on to earn her PhD in French Phonetics from the University of California in Santa Barbara.  She has taught at the University of Texas, Western Washington University, and Asia University as a French and Japanese professor.  In 1995 Kikuchi resigned her professorship to paint full time.

In Points of Reference Kikuchi explores the use of Sumi, which she studied in the 1980’s under Torin Hashimoto. The Sumi is applied to the paper in dots of various sizes, the spacing and form of each mark is representative of Kikuchi’s familiarization to a new place.  Sumi helps the artist to focus on specific parts of a moment, “the individual dots can be likened to individual, human breaths. They are temporal, sequential, even, and rhymed.” Lines and dots embody energy, time, place, perception, nature, and atmosphere.

Kikuchi has taught and exhibited throughout the United States, and in Canada and Japan.  She has work in private and public collections including Asia University, Tokyo; Boeing Corporate Headquarters, Chicago, IL; and Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, WA.
