Each of his works is strengthened by the beauty of simplicity, but the true intrigue of Waterman’s work comes from his rich and varied backgrounds. He situates delicate vessels in the midst of mottled backgrounds of golden brown, deep olive, or warm grey. The juxtaposition creates a non-dimensional setting for his flowers, allowing the viewer’s gaze to flow freely through the painting but come to rest on the detail of the blossoms. “I attempt to create a tranquil meditative look, like a Zen garden, reduced to utter simplicity.” Waterman received his BA in Fine Arts from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington in 1971. He has exhibited with Foster/White since 1982, and has work in public and private collections including Nordstrom, University of Puget Sound, and Washington Mutual Savings & Loan.
