Windsor Utley was born in Laguna, CA in 1920. He graduated from the Choate School in Conneticut, and attended both Pumona College and University of Southern California. Although he did not begin painting until he was 19 years old, he had a passion for the arts that lasted throughout his life. Aside from being an award-wining painter, Utley was a classically trained flautist. In the early 1940’s he performed with the Tacoma Symphony in Washington, and continued to teach and perform throughout his life.
Utley was accepted into Northwest Annual in 1945 where he met was greatly influenced by artist Mark Tobey. Utley taught at Helen Bush School of Art, and later became the head of the art department at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
In 1951 Utley moved to Sienna for one year and was deeply inspired by the art, culture, and architecture of Italy. He maintained a life long passion for Italy and returned frequently to paint, exhibit and live.
Utley’s work is in numerous private and public collections including the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, WA; British Columbia Provincial Collection, Victoria, BC; Duveen-Graham Gallery New York, NY; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA; and the University of Washington.
Windsor Utley passed away April 8, 1989 in Seattle, WA at the age of 69.
