TONY ANGELL AT SEATTLE ART MUSEUM

With knowledge of, respect and gratitude for artists who have historically responded to out Nation's wilderness; Angell offers his particular take on their creations and offers some thoughts on contemporary Naturalism. He argues convincingly that artistic expression is absolutely essential in understanding and sustaining our fundamental links with nature.

CONGRATULATIONS CLARE BELFRAGE WHO JUST WON THE TOM MALONE PRIZE FOR 2011

Judges' Comments: The winner of the Tom Malone Prize 2011 is Clare Belfrage. Her blown vessel "Untitled (#291210) is truly a superb work of art. Though deliberately subtle (as are all of Belfrage's best works), it was instantly captivating as we encountered it for the first time in the foyer of the Canberra Glassworks.

CAMERON ANNE MASON  TEACHING SCHEDULE 2011

Learn from Foster/White fiber artist Cameron Anne Mason at any one of these upcoming class room opportunities:

Surface Tension, Exploring Resists on Fabric
Pratt Fine Arts Center 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Friday May 6 - Sunday May 8, 2011
In this workshop you will layer color , texture, and imagery on fabric using low-tech methods. Create complex patterns adn     textures on fabric by combining temporary resists and fiber reactive dyes. Make art cloth by dyeing, over-dyeing, and discharging color. Use washable resists including soy wax, water-based resists, and paste resists that may already be in your kitchen pantry. The techniques are easily grasped yet endlessly variable, and should be valuable to both the beginner and the experienced surface designer.

Surface, Form and Structure
Co-Taught with Larry Calkins at Pratt Fine Arts Center
Friday July 1 - Sunday July 3, 2011. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Push beyond the expected in this collaborative class, by exploring surface design on cloth, using it to create form, and adding structure for the presentation. Dyes, soy-wax resist, toner transfer, and metal leafing are some of the techniques we will use to layer pattern. texture and image onto fabric. Use the resulting art cloth to form an evocative shape, and fashion a metal hanger to display it. This workshop will emphasize process and experimentation, encouraging students to get out of their comfort zone and into a new place of possibility.

JAMES MARTIN "STRAWBERRY SERIES" REVIEW BY GAYLE CLEMANS FOR THE SEATTLE TIMES

"James Martin's art is like bluegrass music - the upbeat tempo can disguise a forlorn story. In Martin's signature paintings - which he's been creating and tinkering for over three decades - cartoonlike characters, lively colors, swirling paint and quick, quivering lines create an exuberance that is tempered by a subtle sense of degradation and dejection."
